The key to obtaining a CDL if you have a felony conviction is that you must still have a valid driver’s license from the state in which you currently live. You must also be in good health and at least 21 years of age to drive a commercial motor vehicle. You must also read, write, speak and understand English well enough to communicate with the public.
.) Make a list of your work history for the past 10 years. You will need your work history for applying at a truck driving school and for job applications. Federal law requires trucking companies to look at 10 years of job history, and most truck driving schools want the same information. You will also have to disclose your driving record and criminal record.
.) Apply for truck driver training at a local community college or private truck driver training school. Insurance for trucking companies require a potential driver to have graduated from a truck driver training school. Truck driver training schools will help you study for the tests you must take to get your CDL permit. You will need to go to your local Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch and take a general knowledge test, combination test and air-brake test to get a class A CDL permit. The class A CDL license is required to drive a semi tractor trailer combination.
.) Attend all of the required classroom time. You will learn about trucking laws, safety and log books. If you miss class time you will miss valuable information needed to pass the final exam.
.) Attend all of the range labs, driving times and street driving times. These are important to help you learn to maneuver the tractor and trailer. You will also learn the route you will take on your final driving exam.
.) Study for the final exam. Your truck driving school will give you a final written test, a skills test and road test. The test will require you to know how to complete an inspection of the truck prior to driving, as well as basic skills such as backing and parking. You will also take a road test to ensure you know how to safely drive on public roads. Upon successful completion of all the tests the school will give you a sealed packet to take to your local Bureau of Motor Vehicles to get your new license.
